From Baroque to Beatles and Beyond - An Afternoon With the Guitar
Scott Sanchez will play a variety of music from the Baroque era to music of the 20th and 21st centuries. This program will highlight the influences of classical, jazz and popular music on the instrument. Originally from Colorado, Scott’s journey on the guitar began at ten years old with lessons from his brother. Initially interested in rock music, as a teenager Scott became fascinated with the recordings of classical guitarists Andrés Segovia, Pepe Romero and John Williams, among others. When he was 18, he was invited to participate in the international Pepe Romero Masterclass at The University of Tampa. Since this time, Scott has spent his life dedicated to communicating to audiences through his guitar.
He has performed in Europe and throughout North America. Referring to his British debut Classical Guitar Magazine (Great Britain) said, “Sanchez drew the audience into his playing with his excellent performance and made light work of playing what at times looked like some fearsomely difficult passages.” Russell Austin, President Mid Hudson Classical Guitar Society said, ”Sanchez' performance provided an evening of pure listening bliss. Comfortably playing in every style; whether Baroque, Brazilian, Romantic, Ragtime or jazz, Mr. Sanchez' virtuosic technique combined with his sensitive and intelligent interpretive skill, brought his audience along on a journey something akin to musical Nirvana.” Soundboard Magazine described Sanchez's playing as "Colorful and poignant.”
Sanchez's four cds on Intraspect Productions cover a vast repertoire spanning the music of the Baroque era to modern day masterpieces. Scott's scholarly endeavors include writing articles that have frequently been published in international music periodicals. In addition, he regularly arranges and composes for the guitar. His arrangements and composition are available at his website and at Sheet Music Plus (a division of Hal Leonard LLC).
Sanchez is on the faculty of Dartmouth College as a Lecturer in Music where he teaches classical guitar. He has taught college level courses in Guitar, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz History, Music in Film, and Women in Music. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Denver as a student of the renowned Cuban classical guitarist, Ricardo Iznaola. He graduated with a Master of Music degree from Yale University. During his time at Yale, Sanchez had the privilege of being both a teaching assistant and a student of the esteemed American classical guitarist, Benjamin Verdery. As a student, he also performed in masterclasses for renowned guitarists such as Scott Tennant, David Russell and Pepe Romero, among others.
